Josh Donaldson has written himself into history.
The New York Yankees third baseman crushed a grand slam for a walk-off win in the 10th inning of Wednesday night’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

And he actually broke a record while doing it.

According to Elias, their 13 “walk-off” wins this season are tied for their fourth-most in franchise history, trailing only the 1943 Yankees (17), 2009 Yankees (15) and 1904 Yankees (14) … also recorded 13 “walk-off” wins in 1942, 1961 and 1978.
Elias also notes that Donaldson was just the third Yankee to hit a “walk-off” grand slam with the club trailing by at least 3R, joining Jason Giambi (trailing 12-9 in the 14th inning) and Babe Ruth (trailing 5-2 in the 10th inning) … was the fifth Yankee to hit a “walk-off” grand slam in extra innings, joining Jason Giambi (14th inning), Ruppert Jones (10th inning), Joe Pepitone (10th inning) and Babe Ruth (10th inning).
The big hit also offers a glimmer of hope amid an August slump.

Here’s what Donaldson said after the game, via NJ Advance Media’s Randy Miller:
“I think that’s who we are as a team,” Donaldson said with an ice bag wrapped around his swollen right forearm. “I don’t think the last two weeks is who we are. I think that’s more of a blip than anything. I think for us to be ourselves and go out there and compete to the last final out and pick each other up, that’s what we do.”
