AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts women’s soccer team kicks off its 2022 regular season tomorrow at 4 pm against UAlbany on Rudd Field. The Minutewomen are in action twice on opening week and will take on Fairfield on the road on Sunday afternoon.
The Opener
Tomorrow’s match marks the first time that the Minutewomen have hosted the regular season opener at Rudd Field since a 2-0 win over Maine in 2018.
The Squad
UMass returns a plethora of players from last season’s team that reached the Atlantic 10 Championship game, including second-team all-conference selections in Ashley Lamond and Fiona Kane. Lamond also earned an A-10 All-Rookie Team selection after scoring a team-high eight goals and was joined on the team by Chandler Pedolzkywho led the conference in assists a season ago to rank inside the top-50 nationally in the category.
The 2021 season
The Minutewomen finished last season with an 11-6-4 overall record and a 5-3-2 mark in conference play on their way to the first Atlantic 10 Championship game since 2011. UMass went unbeaten in 10 consecutive contests last year from late August to the beginning of October and outscored opponents 16 to five during the span. The Minutewomen began their championship game run with a 5-1 win over St. Bonaventure in the A-10 Championship quarterfinals before defeating Saint Joseph’s in the semifinals, 2-0.
Fresh Faces
UMass returns 27 players from last year’s team and welcomes in four newcomers for the 2022 campaign. The group of newcomers features three freshmen from Massachusetts Bianca Cardano, Sarah Flanaganand Nia Hislop while Jess Collantes joins the Minutewomen from Canada.
Atlantic 10 Preseason Coaches Poll
The Minutewomen were picked to finish fifth in the Atlantic 10 Preseason Coaches Poll as announced by the league last Thursday. UMass received 170 points in the poll with Saint Louis tabbed to finish first followed by Dayton, new A-10 member Loyola Chicago, and VCU.
Looking Ahead
UMass will play three straight games away from home following Thursday’s opener, beginning with a match at Fairfield on Sunday, Aug. 21 at 4 pm The Minutewomen head to Pittsburgh on Thursday, Aug. 25 to face-off against an ACC opponent before wrapping up the road stretch at Robert Morris on Aug. 28. UMass then returns home to Rudd Field for its next three matches, beginning with Boston College on Thursday, Sept. 1 at 4 p.m
