Women’s Soccer Duals UMBC to Draw

WASHINGTON – GW women’s soccer opened up its 2022 campaign on Thursday afternoon at the Mount Vernon Soccer Field, battling UMBC to a 1-1 draw.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
24th minute: GW got on the board first thanks to Rachel Sorken’s first goal of the season. Sorkenn buried the shot from 12 yards out after a nice feed into the box by Margaret Rabbitt.
42nd minute: UMBC knotted the game at one following a goal off a corner kick. Meghan McKye was the goalscorer for the Retrievers, and she found the back of the net following a cross from teammate Lola Negrete.

NOTEWORTHY:
• In the 85th minute, GW had a chance to take the lead via a penalty. However, UMBC goalkeeper Morgan McGruder was able to save Isabelle Eskay’s penalty attempt.
• Thursday was Sorkenn’s first game in almost two seasons, having missed all of 2021 due to an injury.
• Sorkenn’s goal was her first since November 10, 2019 at Saint Louis. She now has 14 career goals.
Avril Silva, Aza Keohan, Tia Harrison, Grace Crowe, Aoi Kataoka and Caitlin Cunningham all made their Buff & Blue debut Thursday afternoon.
• GW led the way in most of the statistical categories, holding a 10-5 advantage in shots, an 8-1 advantage in shots on target and an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks.
