Box Score

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. –
The Marshall University women’s soccer team (1-1-2) ended a three-game point streak in a 3-1 loss to the Ohio Bobcats (1-1-1) on Sunday night at Hoops Family Field.

“It was very unfortunate towards the end there on the third goal with Regan (Meyer) getting hurt while making a routine save and they reacted, so fair play to them for getting the safety goal,” Herd women’s soccer head coach Michael Swan said after the match. “I’m so proud of the effort and energy they showed in the second half to pull ourselves back into the game against an extremely good Ohio team that’s picked high in the MAC.”

The Bobcats scored the first goal of the night on a shot by Regan Berg at the 6:17 mark.

Graduate student midfielder Kat Gonzalez tried to knot the score with a shot from distance, but Ohio goalkeeper Celeste Sloma was there to make the save in the 13th minute.

The Bobcats had shots in the 14th and 16th minutes. However, Herd freshman goalkeeper Alexis Wolgemuth stood tall and saved both attempts. Sophomore midfielder Cassidy Bell followed with an attempt that was saved by Sloma in the 26th minute.

Wolgemuth made her third save of the contest at the 40:15 mark to keep the deficit at one, 1-0.

Ohio scored another goal with 27 seconds left in the opening stanza on a header by Cailynn Adelman as Marshall trailed 2-0 at halftime.

Coming out of the break, senior forward Morgan White nearly cut the deficit in half, but had her attempt saved in the 54th minute. However, in the 56th minute, White took the ball off a deflection and found the back of the net with her team-leading third goal of the season to cut the Bobcat lead to 2-1.

Junior goalkeeper Regan Meyerwho came on for Wolgemuth to start the second half, stopped an Ohio attempt at the 57:42 mark for her first save of the contest.

Marshall nearly tied the match in the 70th minute on an attempt by the freshman forward Bailey Fisherbut it was saved.

Meyer made another great save at the 83:03 mark. She saved another shot later in the 84th minute of action, but Ohio’s Aubrey Rey put away the rebound and made it 3-1 Ohio.

Gonzalez stepped to the penalty spot in the 84th minute for a penalty kick. The attempt was saved by the Ohio keeper. White had two more shots on goal in the 86th and 89th minutes, but both attempts were saved.

“I love watching our team when they do that in the second half and put teams under pressure. Their energy and endeavor will get them a lot of wins this season. This group is special and they’ve shown its special. There have been some off nights, but there’s been a lot of on nights for a lot of players. They’ll be ticking soon and there will be some big wins down the road.”
