Lexington, Va.– UMBC women’s soccer used a pair of first half goals to defeat VMI 2-0 on Saturday for their second straight win. Natasha Munro (Burlington, Ontario) and Caroline Koutsos (Boyds, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) provided the goals as UMBC dominated possession for most of the match.
The win improves UMBC to 2-1-1, while the Keydets fall to 0-4 on the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Natasha Munro got things going in the eighth minute with her first collegiate goal. Munro took a rebound off the post and slotted it home to give UMBC a 1-0 lead.
- UMBC had another great chance off a set piece, but from the header Delainey Varela-Keen (Lancaster, Pa.) sailed high in the 15th minute.
- Caroline Koutsos added a goal late in the first half to make it 2-0. She beat the VMI keeper past the near post from six yards out for her first goal of the season.
- UMBC would take a 2-0 lead into halftime, outshooting the Keydets 19-4.
- Binko had a great chance early in the second half off a cross from Munro, but her header went just wide in the 54th minute.
- VMI had their best chance in the 75th minute off a set piece, but the shot sailed just over the bar.
- UMBC shut down the Keydets offense down the stretch to win their second straight 2-0 on Saturday.
NOTES:
- UMBC outshot the Keydets 22-9 including 10-3 in shots on goal.
- Morgan McGruder (Overland Park, Kan.) made three saves in the match, playing all 90 minutes in net.
- Koutsos, Munro, et al Lola Negrete (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) each had four shots in the contest for the Retrievers.
UMBC will take their two-game winning streak back to Baltimore to take on Delaware State on Thursday, September 1. Kickoff with the Hornets is set for 6 pm at Retriever Soccer Park.
