Women’s Soccer and Merrimack Battle to 1-1 Tie Thursday Night at Mahaney Diamond

ORONO, Maine — The University of Maine women’s soccer team tied the Merrimack College Warriors, 1-1, on Thursday night at Mahaney Diamond.

The two non-conference opponents battled to a 0-0 tie after the first 45 minutes of play. Kira Kutzinski made a highlight save on Merrimack’s best opportunity of the first half.

First Goal (1-0 Merrimack): Hallie Shires scored the first goal of the contest two minutes into the second half. Maine tried to clear the zone but instead passed the ball directly to a waiting Shires. The Warrior did not waste her opportunity and gave her squad a short lived one goal advantage.

Second Goal (1-1): Kayla Kraemer managed to direct a bouncing ball to her teammate, Birte Speck. The senior was left unmarked and scored with an immense amount of ease. It was the second goal of the first seven minutes of the second half, and the score was tied at one goal apiece.

It was the final goal of the 90 minutes as the New England rivals played to a 1-1 tie at Mahaney Diamond.

Maine recorded 16 total shots on goal to Merrimack’s 13, while the Black Bears recorded seven corner kicks.

Birte Speck scored her first goal of the 2022 season. Kayla Kraemar dished out the assist.

Kira Kutzinski turned away nine shots during the second home contest of the season.

Next: The Black Bears are back on the pitch Sunday, August 28th vs. Bryant. The third non-conference game of the 2022 regular season is scheduled to kick-off at 1:00 pm.
