Women’s Golf Begins Season at Nittany Lion Invitational

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy women’ golf team opens the 2022-23 season on Saturday, Sept. 17 at the Nittany Lion Invitational in State College, Pa. A two-day event, the tournament will be played Sept. 17-18 at the Penn State Blue Course, with 36 holes on Saturday before playing the 18-hole championship round on Sunday morning.

The tournament is set to be played on the par-72, 6,402-yard course, with a 9 am shotgun start on the first day and an 8:30 am shotgun start on the final day.

The Nittany Lion Invitational Field

In addition to the Midshipmen, the 16-team field has a trio of top-100 squads according to GolfStat, with No. 74 Kennesaw State, 85th-ranked Boston College and the host school, No. 95 Penn State, all teeing off in State College this weekend. The rest of the field includes Bradley, Patriot League rival Bucknell, Butler, Central Michigan, Columbiay, Eastern Kentucky, High Point, Patriot League foe Richmond, Seton Hall, Toledo, Towson and Youngstown State.

About the Midshipmen

Head coach Nadia Ste. Marie returns six of her eight golfers from last season’s squad that placed third at the 2022 Patriot League Championship with a three-day score of +76 (940), while also adding highly-touted freshmen Hallie Briscoe spirit Sue Lee … Navy’s top returning golfer is a junior Mara Hirtlewho finished the campaign with a scoring average of 77.08 and placed ninth at the PL Championships to pick up second-team all-league honors, also tying for first place at the Bucknell Invitational last fall… Fellow junior Stephanie Lee was second on the team in average score at 77.83 and finished higher than Hirtle at the league tournament (seventh place) to earn All-Patriot League Second Team accolades as well, also receiving Academic All-Patriot League honors for her effort in the classroom… Senior golfer Eve Wordenwho posted a 78.19 average across eight events last season to rank fourth on the squad, was named the team captain prior to the start of the campaign… Navy also brings back sophomores Jenna Han (81.58), Hannah Han-Kim (82.25) breath Bridget Hoang (78.56) … The Mids lost a pair of golfers from last season in graduated captain Tori Smith and first-team all-league selection Angelina Chanwith Chan placing fifth at the league championship this past spring.

Nittany Lion Invitational History

This will be the first trip by Navy to the Nittany Lion Invitational since Sept. 22-23 2019, when the Mids placed sixth out of 12 teams with a score of 912 and Christine McDonnell finished tied for 11th in a 72-player field at 4-over par 220 … Navy also attended the tournament in 2018, finishing tied for fifth (894 score) in the field of 16, while Morgan Frazier ended in a tie for seventh place among 90 golfers with a two-day total of 2-over par 218 … The 2018 Nittany Lion Invitational saw three then-program records broken, as the Midshipmen set records for lowest team round and lowest 54-hole team score, while Frazier set a record for the lowest 54-hole individual score by a Navy golfer.
