WKU Soccer Falls in Season Opener at #24 Xavier

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — WKU Soccer dropped its season opener on the road at No. 24 Xavier on Thursday by a score of 1-0.

“Xavier is a really good team,” said the head coach Jason Neidell. “They made us work defensively, and it was great to see our players grow into the game. These tough early games will be great in preparing us for a strong conference slate.”

The game was knotted at a 0-0 standstill for the first 34 minutes, but Xavier notched the only goal of the game with just 38 seconds left in the first half. The WKU defense withstood 13 total shots from the Musketeers and goalkeeper Alexis Bach made two saves on the day.

Katie Erwin paced WKU with two shots, both on goal. Erwin had WKU’s most threatening look of the day in the second half when she found a cross in the box, but the goalkeeper was able to make the save. Sydney Ernst and Carmen Marin also had shots in the game.

WKU returns to action on Saturday against Union (Tenn.) in its home opener. The match is set for a 7 PM start. All matches at the WKU Soccer Complex are free to the public.
