WKU Soccer Faces Vanderbilt on the Road

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — WKU Soccer hits the road for a Thursday night matchup with Vanderbilt in Nashville. The match is set for a 7 pm start at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex.

WKU Notes

  • WKU bounced back with a 5-0 win against Union on Saturday in the Lady Toppers’ home opener after falling to No. 24 Xavier, 1-0, to open the season. There were five goal scorers in WKU’s win against the Bulldogs Brooke Sleeve, Kayla Meyer, Katie Erwin, Avery Jacobsen and Anna Isger all scoring in the match.
  • The Lady Toppers were picked to finish second in Conference USA by the league’s coaches in the preseason poll. Three WKU student-athletes were named to the Preseason All-Conference Team Amber Barnett, Lyric Schmidt and Katie Erwin.
  • The Lady Toppers return all but three starters from the 2021 season, including United Soccer Coaches All-Region Third Team members Lyric Schmidt and Katie Erwin.
  • The Lady Toppers finished last season 10-5-1 overall and 5-2-1 in league play, good for a second-place finish in the East division.
  • The 2022 slate includes 18 regular season matches, two exhibitions, 10 conference games and nine home matches.
  • Erwin was tied as WKU’s leading goal scorer in 2021 with four goals on the season and led the team in points with four assists.

Series History

  • WKU and Vanderbilt have played six times in program history with the Lady Toppers winning the most recent meeting that came last season in Bowling Green. WKU defeated the Commodores, 3-2, in overtime.
  • Overall, Vanderbilt owns a 5-1 advantage in the series.

Vanderbilt Notes

  • The Commodores are off to a 2-0 start with a pair of shutout wins against Evansville (3-0) and Purdue (1-0).
  • Against the Boilermakers, Rachel Deresky scored the game-winner in the 78th minute. Deresky also scored the first goal of the season for Vanderbilt in the win against Evansville. Caroline Betts and Raegan Kelley scored the other two goals.
