The Detroit Tigers series finale matchup with the Philadelphia Phillies was moved from Wednesday to Thursday due to smoke from the Canadian wild fires clouding the air and making for bad air quality.
But despite the postponement, the game on Thursday may still be in question.
The Canadian wild fires are still wreaking havoc on the East Coast, with some jarring photos and time lapse videos painting a picture of how the smoke is taking over the city.
An unusually high number of roughly 400 wild fires in Canada is causing the smoke issues and forcing people to take precautions and extra efforts to stay safe as the wind blows the smoke south.
Of all the cities on the east coast, Philadelphia has the worst air quality on Thursday, according to experts. Ironically, Detroit was among the other worst cities in the country on Wednesday.
According to an air quality conditions tracker offered by the city of Philadelphia, the current air conditions have been deemed ‘unhealthy.’
“Some members of the general public may experience health effects. Members of sensitive groups may experience more serious health effects,” according to the city of Philadelphia’s government website.
In addition, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection issued a Code Red Air Quality Action Day across the state for Thursday, according to Phillburbs.com
With all that said, the current status of the game is still unknown. Major League Baseball has not made an official announcement on the status of the games for Thursday. The New York Yankees game with the Chicago White Sox was also called off on Wednesday, so the Tigers and Phillies were not alone.
Right now, we don’t know the exact status, but we can tell you that Free Press Tigers beat writer Evan Petzold has taken a flight back to Detroit. I guess we’ll find out sooner than later.
