While it might be common sense to never trust the ball boy of an opposing team to run errands for you if you are an NBA player, that never seemed to register in former Philadelphia 76ers star point guard Allen Iverson’s mind before he unwisely gave a Boston Celtics ball boy $2,000 to get some beer for the Sixers’ team bus.
That ball boy happened to be Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix, who took the money and a hand truck to set out on his task according to MassLive’s Jay King. On the way back, however, locals began pilfering cases of beer from Mannix, even Celtics players once the then-ball boy had made it to the team parking lot.
By the time Mannix got the hand truck in front of AI, there were only four cases of beer left, saying incredulously “That’s what my money bought you? That’s what $2,000 bought you?”
The future SI analyst hung his head and said yes, which was evidently enough for Mannix to get out of the building with his skin intact.
“I think he was just in such a foul mood that he didn’t really argue,” Mannix related. “As long as there was something on that bus for him, he took it.”
