West Fife: Operation Tramline catches woman using her laptop behind the wheel

A WOMAN was caught using her laptop while driving southbound on the M90.

Caught during Operation Tramline, a road policing initiative that saw officers using an unmarked HGV cab to ensure drivers were driving safely, the 37 year-old was fined £100 and given three points on her licence.

She was just one of over 100 drivers caught since the initiative began on April 26. In May, the Press reported that a woman was caught eating a bowl of cereal while driving on the Queensferry Crossing.

The operation was a success, during the five-week scheme 138 offenses were detected. Of these offences, 80 were for mobile phones, 20 were seatbelt offences, six were for inconsiderate or careless driving and 32 were for other road traffic offences.

speaking on the initiative, road policing officer Tom Aitken said: “Keeping all road users safe is a top priority for Police Scotland and Operation Tramline was set up to help us to reduce the number of road casualties we see on a day to day basis.

“I cannot emphasize enough that drivers should be in control of their vehicle at all times. Eating your breakfast or using a mobile phone or laptop is clearly a major distraction.

“A split second lapse in concentration could result in a crash which could cause serious injury and even death. I would urge all road users to be aware and to stay safe. Road crashes can cause devastation for all those involved.

“The HGV is just one tool we can use to make Scotland’s roads safer and it will be used across Scotland as part of our ongoing work going forward.”
