We’re Australia’s ‘fastest’ mobile network (again) for the start of 2022

Following our ‘fastest’ award from Ookla for the second half of 2021, we’re happy to again be named Australia’s fastest mobile network – this time for the first half of 2022.

The results from Ookla®’s Speedtest Awards™ from January to June 2022 are in, and Telstra has taken out the top gong. Our Ookla Speed Score – a single number that rolls up over half a million download and upload tests – is 107.25, with a healthy lead over our competitors.

At a market-wide level, we handily took out the lead with a median download speed of 81.57 Mbps and median upload of 11.38 Mbps. Our median download speed has also improved in these tests since our last award in the second half of 2021.

Not only were we top of the charts on median download and upload speeds, but we’ve also scored the fastest mobile network speeds in Ookla’s tests for the cities of Sydney, Greater Melbourne and Greater Brisbane – where nearly half of Australia’s overall population resides.

In total, Ookla compared 1,338,193 tests from the Speedtest® app for iOS and Android over the period. We had 689,106 Speedtest tests run on our mobile network, giving us more data points than other network operators. The high number of tests run gives us an even clearer picture of the nationwide health of our network and strong confidence in the accuracy of the results.

Keeping our customers connected is at the center of everything we do, and one part of that is giving customers access to the largest and most reliable mobile network in Australia. That includes expanding our 5G coverage to allow for faster speeds as well as improving the capacity of our 4G network, and it’s also about the new technologies we’re developing like mmWave 5G.

Winning awards for our mobile network is nothing new to us, but we work hard for each and every one of them. We’ve recently passed the milestone of covering 80% of Australia’s population with 5G, and we’re well on track with our plan to roll out 5G to 95% of the population by 2025. We’ll keep rolling out new technology and developing our world-class mobile network as we aim for that goal – you can help keep us striving for more by running a speed test on your mobile device every now and then.
