At the last meeting we heard from Wellbeing Being Lincs and Lincs Sensory Service both of whom support retaining your independence at home.

We have also agreed to join the South and East Lincolnshire Community Lottery where we will receive half of all monies spent through our group link which can be found on our website www.wellandseniorsforum.org.uk; or go to https://www.selcplottery.co.uk/ and search for Welland Seniors Forum.

There will not be another full meeting until March so make the most of this opportunity to get out, chat with other people and find out what support is available

Inner Wheel

The Inner Wheel International was held at Pinchbeck Church Hall on October 6 to raise funds for the British Red Cross Ukrainian Appeal. After lunch served to guests. Jayne Owners, senior fundraiser for the East Midlands, gave an inspiring and enlightening presentation, providing an insight into the functioning of this worldwide charitable organization. She explained how different countries specialize in particular aspects of relief, citing that Norway provides two flying operating theaters and stressing the neutrality of the Red Cross organization. After the talk and vote of thanks Jayne was presented with a check for £200 towards the appeal with the proceeds of the raffle to follow. Spalding Inner Wheel would like to thank all our guests for making this such a successful event. If anyone would like to find out more about the Inner Wheel please contact Jill Bradley on 01775 725152.

Gedney Hill

A charity golf day has raised £1,300 to support the work of two children’s charities.

The second Fenland Golf Open was played at Gedney Hill Golf Club on September 24. The money raised will be shared between Dreamdrops Children’s Charity and Winston’s Wish.

To incorporate our support to local charities, all golfers were asked to wear yellow in keeping with the “Go Yellow for Maddie” campaign which was held on September 22.

Maddie was an inspirational young lady. The support and guidance the Maddie Rose Foundation offers to young people within construction is invaluable.

The event was organized by Stanton Lewis of Fenland Crematorium in March and was sponsored by the parent company Dignity.

Twenty-three golfers competed in a pair’s competition and the group consisted of beginners through to competent club players.

First place went to Derek Lines and Mark Dobson and The Longest Drive went to Alice Greatwood who hit a shot that any golf pro would have been proud of.

Stanton Lewis thanked Fenland Crematorium for sponsoring the event and Simon Watts of SJW Plastering for sponsoring The Longest Drive and Nearest the Pin.

Generous contributions were made by Turner & Sons Funeral Directors and CE Fuller Funeral Directors and many individuals. Gedney Hill was also thanked for allowing the event to take place for the second year. The hospitality and food were first class.

Prizes were presented by Miss Imogen Gipp.

A very special ‘Thank you’ goes out to Lesley Wright who put together a beautiful food hamper (as she did last year) which raised £280.00 in the raffle.

Last year the event raised £615.00. This year it raised £1,300.

Spalding and District Stamp Club

Chairman Dahlia Harrison welcomed members to the November afternoon meeting of Spalding & District Stamp Club. Business matters were quickly dealt with and she then introduced Angela Cooper from Peterborough.

Angela’s topic was Sweden and she started by showing a map of northern Europe and giving a short history of Sweden, which became a separate kingdom in 1523, but after various wars was united with Norway.

This partnership was finally dissolved and modern, independent Sweden was formed in 1905. The first Swedish stamps were issued in 1855 with a second set needed in 1858 following a change of currency. Angela’s display started with the next definitive set and continued with examples of most stamps issued from then until 1993 – there was no space to show their more recent issues.

The first commemorative stamp was issued to mark the opening of a new post office in 1903. In addition to the stamps Angela included interesting postcards, covers with special cancellations, maxi cards and postal stationery.

Among the items specifically mentioned were the stamps celebrating the 50th anniversary of the formation of the Universal Postal Union conference held in Stockholm and the 80th birthday of King Gustav VI Adolf which carried a surcharge for charity. Alfred Nobel, the Swedish scientist appears on stamps and Sweden has also issued many stamps commemorating Nobel Prize winners.

Angela said that one difficulty in collecting Swedish stamps is that they are issued in different formats, sheets, coils and booklets each of which has a different perforation pattern. Polish born stamp designer and engraver Czeslaw Slania moved to Sweden in 1956 and three years later began to design and engrave Swedish stamps.

His designs are very clear often mono-tone in color making them very attractive.

The next meeting of the club is on Tuesday, November 22 at 7.30pm when Dahlia Harrison will talk on ‘Fairy Tales to Fantasy’. At the afternoon meeting of December 7 at 2pm there will be the ‘Egg Cup’ competition in the Fraser Room, Surfleet.
