Welcome to the NHL’s Reverse Retro Day, 2022 Edition

Good morning! If you’re a hockey fan, then today is the day you’ve been looking forward to for a while — the day when the NHL will unveil all 32 Reverse Retro jerseys (and, if we’re lucky, the full uniforms) for this season.

There were lots of hints and teaser videos circulating yesterday (you can see a lot of them by searching Twitter for the #reverseretro hashtag), plus there were at least three new leaks, which you can see above.

A quick FAQ:

What time will the league-wide unveiling be?

I don’t know. But as soon as it happens, I’ll add the link to this post.

When will you write about the designs?

I’ll have a preliminary rundown of the RR unveiling here on the blog tomorrow morning, and I’ll have a more in-depth assessment — probably a Uni Watch Power Rankings treatment — as my Premium article next week.

Why did you just use “RR” instead of the backwards-R thing you’ve been using for the past two years?

It turns out that the backwards “R” renders really badly in the blog’s new font: ЯR. So I’ll just go with RR from now on, at least here on this site (although I’ll probably do the backwards thing on Substack, since it looks fine there).

Any thoughts about the new leaks?

Sure (with the caveat that I’m reserving full judgment until we see the entire uniforms):

  • Blue Jackets: The stars on the sleeves seem a bit overdone and silly, but that’s part of the fun of RR. Speaking of fun, check out this tweet:

  • Yotes: The lighting makes it hard to assess the fabric color, but I think I really like this one.
  • Preds: Not bad, but the most interesting aspect of the original “mustard cat” jersey was the highly unusual square collar, which Adidas hasn’t even tried to replicate. I’m kinda bummed about that, plus that “Nashville” chest patch looks soooo clunky.

Anyway, I’m sure there’ll be plenty to talk about once all the designs are revealed. Enjoy RR Day!

ITEM! New Premium Article

My Premium article on Substack this week is an in-depth interview with Daniel Horine, the brilliant artist behind the excellent Pop Fly Pop Shop, who’s found the ultimate nostalgic sweet spot by combining retro sports and retro comic book art. I’ve been meaning to interview him for a while now, and it was a blast. I really think you’ll like it!

You can read the first few paragraphs of the article here. In order to read the entire thing, you’ll need to become a paying subscriber to my Premium content on Substack. (Didn’t hear about my move from Bulletin to Substack? Additional details on that, including the “Pay What You Wish” subscription option, can be found here.)
