One of the hottest teams in the NHL of late are the Washington Capitals, the winners of eight of their last nine games, spurred by their superstar winger Alex Ovechkin’s run at history. The Caps have climbed from below .500 to within eight points of the Metropolitan Division leading Carolina Hurricanes as the season nears its midway point. Tonight the Capitals play host to the Winnipeg Jets, who have won three of their last five games but come into this game off a 3-2 loss at Boston on Thursday night and are aiming to snap a two-game road losing streak.

Ovechkin has been held goalless in four straight games after a hat trick against Chicago on Dec. 12 got the veteran to 800 career goals and within two goals of passing Hall of Famer Gordie Howe for second all-time in NHL history. Ovi has fired off 16 shots in the last four games but provided four assists in that span including helpers on each of the Caps’ first two goals in last night’s 3-2 overtime win at Ottawa.
Jets defenseman Josh Morrissey leads the team with 33 assists, fourth most in the NHL, and has an assist in eleven consecutive games. The 33 assists is already a career-high for Morrissey.
Washington has won eight of the last eleven in this series including three straight dating back to last season. The Capitals beat the Jets in Winnipeg 5-2 back on Dec. 11 thanks to a four-goal second period that saw the Caps score a goal on the Power Play and a short-handed goal.
