The roles seem reversed now. New Jersey is second in the Metro just four points behind the division-leading Hurricanes. Meanwhile, the Penguins are in the middle of the pack and on the outside looking in. That hasn’t been the case for most of the last decade. Tides are turning. New Jersey has notched at least a point in seven of its last eight games. While the Devils are coming off a loss in overtime against Seattle, they are going to be the favorite at home this afternoon.

The Kraken won 4-3 in the extra period. The win by Seattle game the Kraken as many wins as they had in their inaugural season in just 45 games. The Devils kept showing their resilience in the loss. After two goals to open the game by Ryan Donato, New Jersey tied the game at the beginning of the third with a short-handed goal by Erik Haula. Then New Jersey was down 3-2 until Nico Hischier scored with just 1:14 left in the game to force overtime. While close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades, the overtime-loss point was well earned.
Pittsburgh is coming off a 4-1 win against the Ottawa Senators. It was a vindicating win after Ottawa won 5-4 in overtime in the first game of the home-and-home series. Goalie Tristan Jarry was simply great in game two as he stopped 46 shots after returning from an upper-body injury. If Pittsburgh can get healthy, maybe the tide will start to return to something we’re more familiar with.
