After an upset of the Boston Bruins on Tuesday night, the Ottawa Senators have now won five of their last eight games and tonight start a two-game road swing as they face Alexander Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals for the third time this season and the second time in eight days. The Capitals have won five straight games, including last Thursday’s matchup at Ottawa on Marcus Johansson’s game-winning goal just 2:04 into overtime. Ottawa took the first game of the season series in DC back on Oct. 20, overcoming an early 2-0 Washington lead by scoring three third-period goals in a 5-2 road win led by Drake Batherson’s two-goal effort.

Last week, Ovechkin surpassed Gordie Howe for second place on the NHL’s all-time goal-scoring list. He now sits 93 shy of passing Wayne Gretzky for the record. The 18-year veteran is on pace for his 13th 40-plus goal season and is on pace for just his second 40-plus assist season in his last 12 years. Ovechkin has 18 points in 13 December games despite not collecting a point in two of his last five games.
The Senators’ shootout win against Boston on Tuesday night brought them to within a game of .500 for the season but currently sit 26 points behind the Bruins in the Atlantic division.
Ottawa has six skaters with double-digit goals this season, led by winger Claude Giroux’s 14 goals. The first-round draft pick by the Flyers in 2006 is scoreless in his last three games and comes into tonight 48 points shy of 1,000 for his career.
