Winners of eleven of their last thirteen games, the Washington Capitals have vaulted themselves into the chase for the Metropolitan Division race as the season nears its midway point. Tonight the Capitals play host to the Buffalo Sabers who have won six of their last seven games and will conclude a three-game road swing that saw Buffalo upset Boston, handing the best record in hockey only their eighth loss of the season, then lose to Lowly Ottawa the following night. Tonight is the first of three matchups between the clubs with Washington winning six of the last seven games in the series.

Thirty-seven-year-old winger Alex Ovechkin leads the Capitals in goals and points and is on pace for his tenth career 50-goal season as he now only sits behind Wayne Gretzky for the most all-time. Ovechkin closed out 2022 with four goals in the final two games of the calendar year, including a hat trick in Saturday’s 9-2 blowout home win.
Sabers winger Tage Thompson is second in the National Hockey League with 27 goals and sixth overall with 51 points through his first 35 games. The 25-year-old first-round pick of the St. Louis Blues in 2016 had a blistering December posting 22 points in 11 games.
Buffalo owns the NHL’s third-best Power Play unit converting on 28.0% of opportunities with the man advantage despite only scoring one Power Play goal in their last four games.
