Volkswagen’s All Electric Golf Re-Ignites the Thrill of Driving

  • by

The famous Dutch Volkswagen commercial from 2010, ‘Buying a Volkswagen from an Old Lady’, is still one of the most popular spots the brand has ever produced with millions of views. Here, a shy old lady sells her Golf, and its quality is tested critically by two potential buyers. They inspect the car from all sides, which is interrupted by flashbacks of the old lady driving the Golf excessively like a race car. Convinced by the Golf’s great condition, they finally buy the car. The commercial ends with the super: Not every old lady is trustworthy – luckily every Golf is.

The sequel picks up the story right after the old lady sells her beloved Golf. Apparently, the emotional attachment was bigger than she expected, and she misses the car dearly. In contrast to the fun times she had driving her Golf, her life now feels pretty boring. After discovering the new all-electric ID.4 GTX in front of a Volkswagen dealership she asks for a test drive.

We see her joyfully driving the ID.4 GTX in the same excessive way she drove her old Golf – much to the regret of a shocked Volkswagen dealer in the passenger seat. We can really see how her excitement and passion sparks up as she experiences the pleasure of driving the ID.4 GTX – the same pleasure she once felt driving her old Golf.

The new ID.4 GTX commercial is conceptualized and creatively directed by DDB Voltage, creative lead agency for Volkswagen international vehicle marketing. The production company Zauberberg and the director Jakob Grunert sign responsible for production.
