Virginia Tech hosts Hokie Invitational

BLACKSBURG — The Virginia Tech volleyball team returns home to host the Hokie Invitational this Friday and Saturday. The Hokies will take on Coppin State, Marist and Old Dominion over the two-day tournament.

THINGS TO KNOW

Newcomer Performances

The Virginia Tech newcomers opened their rookie campaign strong at the Seahawk Classic. Freshman Hanna Borer impressed, recording 19 assists against UNCW, 12 assists against Coastal Carolina and 38 assists against Davidson to lead the team. Amaya Roberson finished the weekend ranked second in kills with 17 and a .217 hitting percentage. Transfer Sydney Peterson was also impressive with five blocks against UNCW and six kills against Coastal Carolina.

Home Openers

The Hokies are 4-0 in home openers since 2018, with their last home-opening loss coming at the hands of Radford in 2017. The Hokies opened at home a season ago with the Virginia Tech Invitational, defeating Lehigh (3-2), Toledo (3-0) and Elon (3-1) to open 2021 undefeated. Sarah Powell was named to the All-Tournament Team following the weekend.

Coppin State Scouting

Miajavon Coleman was named the MEAC Volleyball Player of the Week, and Andrea Tsvetanova received Setter of the Week honors after the Eagles’ opening weekend. Coleman recorded 18 kills and 10 digs in the season-opener against North Carolina A&T on Friday, and followed that up with 11 digs and a career-high six blocks against UNC Greensboro. Tsvetanova recorded 51 assists and 17 digs, while also adding three aces and two blocks in the win over the Aggies.

Scouting Marist

Marist is 2-1 on the year, recording wins over Georgia State and Belmont in Atlanta. In the MAAC Preseason Coaches Poll, Marist ranked fourth in the conference. Jordan Newblatt and Mckinley Fox are two players to look out for on the court. Last season, Newblatt led the team with 384 kills and Fox led the team with 1,096 assists.

Scouting Old Dominion

The Monarchs opened the 2022-23 season at the Northern Arizona Invitational. Old Dominion was defeated in straight sets in all three matches against Michigan, Utah Tech and Northern Arizona. Myah Conway returns for her sophomore season after playing her way onto the CUSA All-Freshman Team and was invited to participate in the Women’s National Team Open Program.

UP NEXT

The Hokies travel to Chicago, Ill. for the DePaul Invitational on Sept. 9 and 10. Tech will take on Eastern Michigan and DePaul on Friday, followed by a 3 pm match vs. Saint Louis on Saturday.
