West Des Moines Valley girls golfer Hallie Yates and Marion boys soccer player Jackson Kirsch are the Des Moines Register male and female Athletes of the Week for April 16-22.

Yates won female Athlete of the Week with 49.27% ​​of the vote (1,213). Iowa Falls-Alden girls soccer player Abigail Ites was runner-up with 25.95% (639).

Yates won the Toni Dickey Invitational at the Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny on April 20. She shot 78 over 18 holes to win the meet by two strokes.

Yates also won a triangular meet with Johnston and Waukee Northwest at the Beaver Creek Golf Club on April 19. She carded 38 over nine holes to win by three strokes.

Kirsch won an extremely close vote for male Athlete of the Week over Marshalltown boys golfer Jason Strand. Kirsch received 42.16% of the vote (31,875) and Strand 42.04% (31,786) at the time of the poll’s closing Wednesday night.

Kirsch had a great week for the 3A No. 3 Marion boys soccer team.

Kirsch scored 17 goals and dished out six assists over five games in helping the Wolves move to 9-0. This included an incredible eight-goal performance during a 10-0 win over Vinton-Shellsburg on Friday.
