Utah Tech Drops Fourth Consecutive Game In Blowout Loss

SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Tech Trailblazers suffered their fourth consecutive loss in a blowout on the road against the Northern Iowa Panthers.

The Panthers hosted the Blazers at UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa on Saturday, October 15.

Northern Iowa soundly defeated Utah Tech, 41-14.

Aside from a second quarter score and a late touchdown, the Panthers controlled the Trailblazers throughout the contest.

With 5:22 remaining in the first half and trailing 20-0, the Blazers found their first points of the game on a touchdown pass from Boone Abbott to Joey Hobert. The score cut Northern Iowa’s lead to two-scores.

However, the Panthers added to their total before the end of the second quarter and took a 34-7 lead into the locker room at the halftime break.

The Panthers added another touchdown to their lead before the start of the final quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Abbott hit Rickie Johnson for his second touchdown pass of the afternoon and Utah Tech’s final points of the game.

The Panthers would hold on for the 41-14 win.

Utah Tech was out-gained in total yardage, 548 yards to 249 yards.

Abbott finished the game 12/22 passing for 162 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. Hobert had seven catches for 74 yards and one touchdown. Johnson pulled in three receptions for 53 yards and a touchdown.

Panthers quarterback Theo Day was 13/23 passing for 308 yards and three touchdowns. Sam Schnee led the Panthers with five receptions for 143 yards and a touchdown. Northern Iowa’s Dom Williams had 12 carries for 92 yards and a touchdown.

With the loss, the Trailblazers fell to a 1-5 record this season, including 0-4 on the road.

Utah Tech’s next game is at home against the Sam Houston Bearkats on Saturday, October 22 at 6 pm (MDT). The game will be streamed on ESPN+. The Bearkats are currently 2-2 this season, pending the result of their Week 6 game against Eastern Kentucky on October 15.
