Utah State Golf Opens Fall Season at Weber State

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State’s golf team will open the fall portion of its schedule when the Aggies square off against Weber State on Thursday, Sept. 1, at Ogden Golf & Country Club in Ogden.

The Ryder Cup-style event will be played over two days and feature 36 holes of competition on the first day and 18 more on the second.

Play will begin Thursday at 8 am, with 18 holes of best ball, followed by 18 holes of alternate shot. The event will conclude Sunday with 18 holes of individual match play.

Utah State returns six golfers from a year ago in graduate Cameron Tuckerjuniors John Cook spirit Javier Vazquezand sophomores Julio Arronte Sanchez, Luis Gerardo Cantu spirit Esteban Jaramillo.

The Aggies also welcome two newcomers in Josh Pehrson, who spent his first two collegiate seasons at Utah Tech, and Nate Preslar, who began his collegiate career at Southern Virginia.

Dean Johansen is in his 23rd season as head coach of Utah State and 25th year overall with the golf program.

During the 2021-22 campaign, the Aggies placed ninth at the Mountain West Championship, where Jaramillo capped his true freshman season by firing a 4-under 68 in the final round to record the Aggies’ first individual top-10 finish in a conference championship tournament since 2007. Jaramillo had three birdies and one eagle during his final round. The native of Bogota, Colombia, tied for ninth at 4-under 212 (74-70-68), and was one of 11 golfers to card an eagle during the three-day tournament.

Utah State recorded its best finish of the 2021-22 season at the UC San Diego Invitational, where the Aggies tied for third with a 54-hole score of 9-over 873 (291-280-302), tying with Weber State in the 14-team field. The Aggies’ 8-under 280 in the second round ranks 10th all-time in school history for an 18-hole (vs. par) team low round. Vazquez led the Aggies with his best-ever finish as he tied for fifth at 3-under 213, a 54-hole career best.

As a team, the Aggies’ had a stroke average of 297.54, which ranks 10th all-time in school history. Utah State had three rounds of even-par or better last year, which is tied for 10th in program history.
