MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team begins the 2022 schedule with a pair of road exhibitions, starting with a Wednesday, Aug. 10 matchup at Memphis before capping off the preseason slate against Arkansas State on Saturday, Aug. 13.
The Skyhawks are coming off the program’s fifth Ohio Valley Conference regular season championship following an 11-6-1 campaign and a 6-2 mark in league play.
UT Martin recently opened preseason training last Thursday with the reigning OVC Coach of the Year Phil McNamara entering his 13th season at the helm. During his tenure, the Skyhawks posted a 115-91-22 record while winning four season titles and a pair of tournament crowns.
This season’s squad returns seven starters off last year’s championship team including two-time All-OVC honoree Maria Castaldo, Parker Gelinas, Katey Hunt, Brooke Kala, Izzy Patterson, Makayla Robinson and Hannah Zahn. In addition to 14 overall returners, the Skyhawks welcome eight newcomers into the fold.
Memphis is coming off a strong campaign in 2021 in which the squad posted a 14-5-2 record while ranking in the top-25 nationally for most of the season – including sitting 20th in the final United Soccer Coaches Poll.
Arkansas State also had an impressive season a year ago as the Red Wolves went 10-6-2 overall while posting a 7-2-1 record in league play to win the Sun Belt regular season title.
