A UP man said he sustained a finger injury after his mobile phone exploded during a call. Himanshu, a resident of Hijampur village in Amroha, told ANI the mishap occurred on Friday.

“My mobile phone caught fire when I was on a call. My finger got injured in this. I purchased the mobile on 31 August 2022 from Amroha,” he said.

Himanshu reportedly produced a cash receipt he had obtained after buying the phone just over four months ago.

Picture distributed by the news agency shows what was left of the device that unexpectedly blew up. It appears that the explosion ripped through the now-charred phone cover, which may have offered a degree of protection to the victim.

It remains unknown whether Himanshu was charging his phone while simultaneously talking.

Rare as the incident may be, it wasn’t the first case of a mobile phone blast.

In December 2019, a 15-year-old boy in Satna, Madhya Pradesh, was injured after his phone exploded during an online class.

In March that year, a brand-new phone met the same fate while its owner was riding a scooter, according to reports.

While it’s unlikely that an average phone would blow up on its own, much less prove deadly, the explosions that do occur are typically caused by a thermal runaway resulting from either manufacturing defects or unintended physical damage.

A faulty battery is susceptible to exploding if it overheats, is overcharged or is otherwise compromised in the assembly line.

The infamous Galaxy Note 7 fiasco led Samsung to recall millions of units.

Physical damage to a battery can alter its chemical structure and result in short-circuits, overheating or swelling.
