MOBILE — The Alabama All-Stars scored a pair of late touchdowns to beat their Mississippi counterparts 14-10 Saturday afternoon at Hancock Whitney Stadium on the campus of South Alabama.
Offense was hard to come by early in the ball game, as both teams adjusted to going against the stiff defenses on both sides of the field. Team Mississippi led 3-0 at halftime thanks to a 35-yard field goal from Ocean Springs’ Bart Edmiston Jr.
The Mississippi All-Stars finally got things going in the second half when South Panola tailback D’Mariun Perteet broke free for a 52-yard touchdown run that put Mississippi ahead 10-0.
But the fourth quarter wasn’t as kind to the boys from the Magnolia State.
The Alabama All-Stars put together a four-play, 40-yard touchdown drive following a fumble recovery, scoring on Hueytown quarterback Earl Woods’ four-yard run to trim the Mississippi lead to 10-7 with 8:42 to go.
Following a missed field goal from Edmiston on the ensuing drive, Briarwood Christian quarterback Chris Vizzina marched the Team Alabama offense 79 yards in eight plays to take the lead. Vizzina found Moody receiver Davion Dozier in the corner of the end zone for a 16-yard touchdown to put Alabama ahead 14-10 with 2:35 left.
Mississippi had one final drive to try to win it, but Oxford quarterback Mack Howard was picked off by Pinson Valley defensive back TJ Metcalf, and the Alabama All-Stars ran out the clock.
Neither team had crazy offensive stats, but there were some standout performances:
- Alabama’s Vizzina completed eight of 13 passes for 80 yards with a touchdown (the game winner) and an interception.
- Vizzina’s colleague Woods did most of his damage on the ground, with 63 rushing yards on 12 attempts with the touchdown.
- Prattville’s Kameran Shanks had three catches for 88 yards for Alabama.
- Ridgeland receiver Ayden Williams made the play of the game offensively for Mississippi, with a 43-yard catch on a jump ball down the visiting sideline in the second quarter.
Defense was another story — both team MVPs came on the defensive side of the ball:
- Mississippi linebacker Suntarine Perkins finished with a team-high 10 tackles, including three for a loss.
- Alabama defensive lineman Peter Woods finished with eight tackles, including seven for a loss, with two sacks.
