MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL, MN – The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have added a left-handed pitcher Brent Headrick; right-handed pitchers Matt Canterino and Casey Legumina; and infielder Edouard Julien and to their major league 40-man roster.
Headrick, 24, split the 2022 season between Double-A Wichita and High-A Cedar Rapids, combining to go 10-5 with a 3.32 ERA (108.1 IP, 40 ER), 25 walks, 136 strikeouts, a 1.08 WHIP and a . 224 opponent batting average in 25 games (23 starts). The 6-foot-6, 235-pound lefty was named Twins minor league Pitcher of the Week three times on the season (May 1, September 4 and September 25) and ranked second among all Twins farmhands in strikeouts and innings pitched, and tied for first in wins. The Braidwood, Illinois native was selected by the Twins in the ninth round of the 2019 First-Year Player Draft out of Illinois State University.
Canterino, 24, split last season between Double-A Wichita and the FCL Twins, combining to go 0-1 with a 1.95 ERA (37.0 IP, 8 ER), 23 walks, 54 strikeouts, a 1.16 WHIP and a .154 opponent batting average in 13 games (12 starts). He was placed on the Injured List in June and underwent Tommy John surgery in August. The 6-foot-2, 222-pound right-hander was selected by the Twins in the second round (54th overall) of the 2019 First-Year Player Draft out of Rice University in Houston, Texas, and is currently ranked as the ninth -best prospect in the organization, per MLB.com.
Legumina, 25, pitched for both Double-A Wichita and High-A Cedar Rapids last season, going 2-6 with a 4.80 ERA (86.1 IP, 46 ER), three saves, 36 walks and 92 strikeouts in 33 games (16 starts ). The 6-foot-2, 195-pound righty is ranked as the 26th-best prospect in the Twins system, per MLB.com. The Dallas, Texas native was selected by the Twins in the eighth round of the 2019 First-Year Player Draft out of Gonzaga University.
Julien, 23, spent the 2022 season with Double-A Wichita, hitting .300 (120-for-400) with 19 doubles, three triples, 17 home runs, 67 RBI, 77 runs scored, 98 walks, 19 stolen bases, a .441 on-base percentage, a .490 slugging percentage and a .931 OPS in 113 games. The 6-foot-2, 195-pound infielder led the Texas League in walks and on-base percentage, while ranking third in OPS, sixth in slugging percentage, and seventh in batting average, and was named to the Texas League Postseason All- Star Team. He recently played in 21 games for Glendale in the Arizona Fall League, hitting .400 (28-for-70) with five doubles, five home runs, 17 RBI and a 1.249 OPS. Julien was named AFL Breakout Player of the Year after winning the league’s batting title, while ranking first in both on-base percentage (.563) and OPS. The Quebec, Canada native was selected by the Twins in the 18th round of the 2019 First-Year Player Draft out of Auburn University and is currently ranked as the 14th-best prospect in the organization, per MLB.com.
Additionally, the Twins have avoided arbitration with an outfielder Kyle Garlick and have signed him to a contract through the 2023 season.
The Twins now have 40 players on their major league roster: 24 pitchers, one catcher, six infielders and nine outfielders.
