Chaos.
The NFL was turned on its head on Wednesday at the trade deadline, with multiple teams getting involved and some big-name players on the move.
Bradley Chubb is now a Dolphin. Chase Claypool is a Bear. And Calvin Ridley has a new team, even though he’s suspended for the rest of the season.
With a number of contenders looking to consolidate before a push for the post-season, the aggression was clear to see in the market, with a tsunami of deals coming in the final 24 hours before the trade door slammed shut at 7am Wednesday (AEDT) .
Here are the biggest deals at the deadline…
SUSPENDED RECEIVER ON THE MOVE
Calvin Ridley is taking his talents to Jacksonville.
The Falcons are trading Ridley, who is suspended for at least the rest of the season after it was determined that he bet on NFL games, for what NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport characterizes as a “complex” package of draft picks that could be as high as a 2024 second-rounder if he reaches an extension with the team.
Atlanta drafted Ridley 26th overall out of Alabama in 2018.
In four seasons with the Falcons, the wide receiver had 248 catches for 3,342 yards and 28 touchdowns.
DOLPHINS LAND STAR RUSHER, TRIGGER MADNESS
The Broncos have traded linebacker Bradley Chubb to the Dolphins.
Denver dealt the Pro Bowl pass-rusher for a package that includes the 2023 first-round pick that Miami acquired from San Francisco, as well as running back Chase Edmonds, according to ESPN.
The Dolphins are reportedly expected to work out a new long-term deal with Chubb.
Chubb has 26 tackles, 5.5 sacks and four tackles for loss in 2022.
Following that deal, both teams worked to fill holes, with the Broncos trading for pass rusher Jacob Martin from the Jets, while the Dolphins acquired running back Jeff Wilson from the San Francisco 49ers.
BILLS FIND THEIR RUNNING BACK
With just minutes to go before the trade deadline, the Bills finally got a running back.
Buffalo acquired Nyheim Hines from the Colts, according to ESPN. Running back Zack Moss is going to Indianapolis in the deal, per NFL Network.
The Bills have been in search of a running back for weeks, and according to Fox Sports called the Saints about Alvin Kamara, but New Orleans shut down the talks.
BEARS LAND FIELDS SOME HELP
The Bears continue to wheel and deal ahead of the 2022 NFL trade deadline.
According to ESPN, the Pittsburgh Steelers have traded third-year wide receiver Chase Claypool to Chicago.
The deal comes after the Bears have been major players ahead of the deadline. In the last week, Chicago traded star pass rusher Robert Quinn to the Eagles for a fourth-round pick, then sent linebacker Roquan Smith to the Ravens for second- and fifth-round picks.
The Bears now get an additional weapon for second-year quarterback Justin Fields, who has shown signs of growth in recent weeks despite having little to work with in the passing game.
RIVALS PLAY NICE
Lions tight end TJ Hockenson is going from last to first in the NFC North.
Detroit has traded the 25-year-old Hockenson to the Vikings, along with a 2023 fourth-round pick and a conditional 2024 fourth-round pick.
Minnesota, who is currently the division leader at 6-1, will send a 2023 second-round pick and a 2024 third-round pick to Detroit in return.
Hockenson was selected eighth overall out of Iowa by the Lions in the 2019 NFL Draft. He played in 12 games last season, recording 61 receptions for 395 yards and four touchdowns.
Through seven games this season, Hockenson has logged 26 receptions for 395 yards and three touchdowns. The Lions, who are in their second season under head coach Dan Campbell, are currently 1-6.
