Town Ward: Public Energy show includes wearable tech

  • by

Public Energy Performing Arts is excited to kick off its 29th season with Digital Dervish and Flamenco Sonic, an international program of multimedia dance.

“Digital Dervish and Flamenco Sonic” combines digital projections, live performance and wearable technology and features a whirling dervish and a flamenco dancer becoming intertwined as they relate a story of landscape, earth, love and life. The Soundrop, the wearable technology used by the performers, augments and highlights movements and gestures.

The program was created by Hedy Hurban, a UK-based electronic music composer, choreographer and costume designer, who developed the Soundrop. Collaborating with Hurban, is her partner, filmmaker, and production designer Kaz Rahman, who is originally from Peterborough and is now based in the UK

In-person performances take place Friday at 7:30 pm and Saturday at 1 pm at Market Hall Performing Arts Center, 140 Charlotte St. The Saturday show is also being simultaneously livestreamed and will be available for one week following the performance.

Following each show, there will be a Question-and-Answer period with the artists. Tickets are pick-a-price, starting at $5, and are available at tickets.markethall.org.

Tiny Homes

Peterborough Action for Tiny Homes (PATH) recently unveiled its first tiny home — a sleeping cabin with a lockable door for people experiencing homelessness.

For those unable to attend the launch event, the model sleeping cabin will be roving around Peterborough. Community members are invited to look at the cabin and ask questions of volunteers, including those who have been, or are currently, unhoused.

The cabin will be on display at the Cathedral of St. Peter-in-Chains, 411 Reid St., until Saturday; at Emmanuel United Church, 534 George St, from Sept. 10 to 17; and at the Purple Onion Festival in Millennium Park on Sept. 25. PATH aims to house 15 people this winter, with an ultimate vision of a 50-person community. For more information, please visit the PATH Facebook page.
