One-hundred and forty-seven players competed Monday in the opening day of the 2023 South Dakota Golf Association Junior Championship at Cattail Crossing Golf Course.
Golfers in the 9-and-under and 10-11 boys and girls divisions each played nine holes and completed their tournament play.
Golfers in the 12-13 and 14-15 divisions each played 18 holes with another 18 scheduled for Tuesday. Golfers in the 16-18 divisions are slated to play 18 holes over three days (54 holes) and will complete their final round on Wednesday.
Four individual champions were crowned on Monday, Madelynn Lahren (girls) and Teddy Krivarchka (boys) of Brandon in the 9-and-under divisions and Faith Roehrich of Watertown (girls) and Lincoln Trasamar of Sioux Falls (boys) in the 10-11 divisions.
Kaitlin Strain of Rapid City (12-13 girls) and Tyson Blom of Sioux Falls (12-13 boys) each grabbed three shot leads in their respective divisions.
Rylan Horning of Rapid City (girls) and Carter Peterson of Sioux Falls (boys) hold leads after the first day in the 14-15 divisions as did Olivia Braun of Aberdeen (16-18 girls) and Sawyer Sonnenschein of Pierre (16-18 boys).
Kaden Wookey of Clark was one of two golfers three shots back of Blom in the 12-13 boys division and Watertown golfers Jerome Zebroski and Jake Olson are among five golfers (along with Nolan Cinco and Mac Drake of Sioux Falls and Keeton Newborg of Tea) who trail Sonnenschein by one shot in the 16-18 boys division.
