Tottenham part ways with Stellini, staff after ‘wholly unacceptable’ loss

Tottenham Hotspur has ended Cristian Stellini’s short stay as interim manager, installing Ryan Mason back into the role following Spurs’ 6-1 blowout away loss to Newcastle on Sunday.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy issued a statement decrying the game as “wholly unacceptable” and “devastating.”

Stellini’s entire staff will leave with him. Levy also said the responsibility is all his, and thanked Stellini for his work during “a difficult point in our season.”

Stellini was Antonio Conte’s right-hand man in a wild season that saw Conte miss several games after undergoing surgery, ultimately returning only to exit following an extremely unusual rant criticizing the character of essentially every part of Spurs including him.

Even that seems like ages ago.

All this while former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has been linked with a move to Chelsea.

Who will be next in line for the Spurs’ head job? Julian Nagelsmann has been linked but the uncertainty surrounding Spurs and their players’ efforts in recent performances, let alone their place on the table, will lead to much debate about who will want the job.

Trying times at Tottenham.

Tottenham’s full statement on Cristian Stellini’s departure

from tottenhamhotspur.com

Dear All,

Sunday’s performance against Newcastle was totally unacceptable. It was devastating to see. We can look at many reasons why it happened and while myself, the Board, the coaches and players must all take collective responsibility, ultimately the responsibility is mine.

Cristian will leave his current role along with his coaching staff. Cristian stepped in at a difficult point in our season and I want to thank him for the professional manner in which he and his coaching staff have conducted themselves during such a challenging time. We wish him and his staff well.

Ryan Mason will take over Head Coach duties with immediate effect. Ryan knows the club and the players well. We shall update further on his coaching staff in due course.

I met with the Player Committee today – the squad is determined to pull together to ensure the strongest possible finish to the season. We are all clear we need to deliver performances which earn your amazing support.

COYS, Daniel
