This past Friday and Saturday, the Ohio High School Athletic Association held the soccer state championships in Columbus at Lower.com Field. It started with the three girls state championship games on Friday and then the boys took the pitch on Saturday for their three games.
Here are some stars from those six games.
Kami Ayoup, Copley
The Copley goalkeeper led all girls goalkeepers in the state championship game with eight saves in a 1-0 win over Waynesville.
Danny Claypool, Grandview Heights
Claypool was the only player to score multiple goals in the state championship games, as he netted a pair of goals in a 3-0 win over Ottawa Hills in the Division III state title game. He scored 4:15 into the game and added another goal later in the first period.
CJ Debra, Cincinnati Country Day
In the Division III state final, she did not allow a goal as Country Day defeated Ottawa-Glandorf 1-0.
Owen Maruca, St. Ignatius
With the Division I boys state title game still scoreless, Maruca headed a ball past New Albany goalkeeper Kyle Lapper with 23:33 left in the game.
Patrick McLaughlin, St. Ignatius
While McLaughlin faced just two shots on goal, one was at point-blank range with the game tied 0-0 that McLaughlin turned away to help the Eagles win the Division I state championship.
Shannon Ott, Seton
With the Division I state title game scoreless late in the second half, Ott found the back of the net on a pass from Mackenzie Carle with 11:50 left to give the Saints a 1-0 win.
Emma Stransky, Copley
After scoring four goals in Copley’s 7-1 state semifinal win over Bay, the senior scored the only goal in the Division II state championship game to give the Indians a 1-0 win and their first state title.
Riley Tarvin, Seton
The Saints goalkeeper was perfect on Friday, as she stopped all seven shots on goal from Strongsville.
Jack Tenwalde, Lima Shawnee
After pitching a shutout through 80 minutes of regulation and 30 minutes of overtime, Tenwalde then made saves on three of four attempts in the penalty kick shootout to secure the Division II state title.
Elizabeth Zimmerman, Cincinnati Country Day
The Division II state championship game had gone more than 70 minutes without a goal before Zimmerman scored what turned out to be the game-winner with 9:33 remaining.
