Top NHL picks November 9: Bet on Minnesota’s offense to go Wild

There are four NHL games on Wednesday’s slate and a number of quality options for bettors.

The pregame narrative: The Pittsburgh Penguins are slumping but we like their chances of snapping out of it against the Washington Capitals. Both the Vancouver Canucks and Minnesota Wild, meanwhile, face exploitable defenses and shouldn’t have issues scoring.

Check out our top NHL picks for November 9 below.

NHL picks

Best Bet : Penguins moneyline (-130)

Pittsburgh’s in a funk but a great opportunity to get back in the win column awaits on Wednesday.

The Penguins have followed up an excellent 4-0-1 start with seven consecutive losses. Teams are outscoring the Pens 33-16 over this stretch, largely due to a save percentage (.856) that ranks 31st in the NHL over the last two weeks.

Goaltending, however, is the only area of the Penguins’ game that’s letting them down.

Outside of poor play between the pipes, Pittsburgh continues to be one of the best teams in the league. It ranks third in high-danger chances for percentage (59.69%) over the last couple of weeks thanks to placing top 10 in high-danger chances for and against, according to Natural Stat Trick.

The Capitals haven’t been playing great ahead of this contest, however, and are dealing with a number of injuries. John Carlson, TJ Oshie and Dmitri Orlov continue to miss time and their absences help explain why the team is struggling.

Despite winning on Monday, Washington has lost four of its last five and sits 22nd in high-danger chance percentage (47.80) across the last two weeks.

Bet on the Pens to end their losing streak in another Sidney Crosby vs. Alex Ovechkin showdown.

Key stats: The Caps rank 23rd in high-danger chances per 60 (10.69) over the last couple of weeks.

Quick picks

Canucks over 3.5 goals (-112): This is less of a play on Vancouver than it is a fade of the Canadiens.

Montreal continues to be one of the worst defensive teams in the league, allowing the third-most high-danger chances per 60 (16.52) over the last two weeks. The Habs played Tuesday night and started Jake Allen, meaning we’ll likely see backup Samuel Montembeault and his career .894 save percentage.

The Canucks have scored four or more goals in four of their last six games.

Wild over 3.5 goals (-109): Similar to our Canucks play, this is more of a bet against Minnesota’s opponent than a wager on the Wild.

The Ducks are also among the NHL’s worst defensive squads. They’ve allowed the most high-danger chances per 60 (18.46) across the past couple of weeks. Anaheim also combines its poor defensive play with a 25th-ranked, .882-team save percentage during the same span.

The Wild played last night, but are averaging 3.73 goals per game on zero days of rest since last season.
