NHL picks
Best Bet : Bruins moneyline (+102)
The Bruins won’t stop winning hockey games so we’re not going to stop picking them.
Boston’s six-game winning streak has it tied for the league lead in points (18) despite playing one fewer game than the Las Vegas Golden Knights. There were questions when GM Don Sweeny relieved Bruce Cassidy of his head coaching duties in the offseason, but things seem to be going well to this point.
A 9-1-0 record has the Bruins sitting comfortably atop the Eastern Conference standings. They most recently mounted a three-goal comeback against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday night, rallying back from a 5-2 deficit to win in overtime.
There have been some close calls this season but it has been smooth sailing for the most part. The Bruins have won six games in regulation and have outscored opponents 45-26.
Tonight, they’ll have to contend with Igor Shesterkin and the New York Rangers in Madison Square Garden. Last year’s Vezina winner has started his title defense out hot, with a 6-0-2 record, 2.22 goals against average and .921 save percentage.
That said, we think the Bruins can crack him. David Pastrnak is leading the way for Boston with seven goals and 18 points, Patrice Bergeron is operating at a point-per-game clip and Brad Marchand has scored three times in his two games played.
This team is firing on all cylinders and we’re not going to bet against them until proven otherwise.
Key stats: Boston’s nine wins are tied for the most in the NHL.
Quick picks
Red Wings moneyline (-105): Detroit’s rebuild has shown signs of life this season. The Red Wings sit at 4-3-2 through nine games and host the Washington Capitals (-115) tonight. We’re content with backing the home underdogs in this spot.
Ville Husso has been solid between the pipes so far. His .926 SV% is the 11th-best mark in hockey and his 2.40 GAA is respectable. We like his chances at stifling a Capitals team that’s struggling to find the net.
Washington has lost three of its last four games and is averaging just 1.75 goals over that span.
Wild to win in regulation (-115): The Wild’s season began about as poorly as one could imagine. Minnesota gave up 20 goals in its three games and was 1-3-1 after five. Since then, things have gotten much better.
The Wild have won four of their last five — with three coming in regulation — and have held opponents to just 1.8 goals in that span. They host the Seattle Kraken tonight.
