Top NHL picks January 22: Expect the Jets and Flyers to fill the net

There are five NHL games on tap this Sunday and we’ve got three picks to complement the slate.

The pregame narrative: The Philadelphia Flyers and Winnipeg Jets are both starting backup goalies and that should translate to a high-scoring game. Meanwhile, the San Jose Sharks should be tough against the Bruins in Boston and there’s value in fading Bryan Rust’s point prop.

NHL picks

Best Bet : Flyers/Jets over 6.5 goals (-106)

The Flyers made a questionable roster decision this week when they sent down goaltender Samuel Ersson and recalled Felix Sandstrom.

The former was backing up Carter Hart brilliantly, posting a 2.37 GAA with a solid .918 save percentage in five games (5-0-0). But Philadelphia decided to bring Sandstrom back up, and he’s struggled mightily this season.

Sandstrom is 1-6-1 as a starter with a 3.37 GAA and a .888 save percentage. He hasn’t played enough games to qualify, but both those marks would fall outside the league’s top 40.

Since Hart played last night, Sandstrom is expected to take the crease this evening.

The Jets will also likely be without Connor Hellebuyck tonight since he started last night’s contest against the Ottawa Senators.

His backup, David Rittich, hasn’t been terrible but he has conceded three-plus goals in five of his past eight games.

Key stats: The over has hit in six of Philadelphia’s last seven home games.

Quick picks

Bruins -1.5 (-134): The Bruins are putting together one of the greatest NHL seasons of all time, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that we’re backing them today. Boston is 36-5-4 this season and has won 27 of those games by two-plus goals.

Meanwhile, San Jose sits near the bottom of the Pacific Division and carries a dreadful minus-31 goal differential into this matchup.

The Sharks lost 5-3 last night and will likely turn to James Reimer in goal today. The former Toronto Maple Leaf has a terrible 3.23 GAA and .897 save percentage this season.

Rust under 0.5 points (-115): Rust is a fine player, but he’s been held pointless more often than not this season and is faced with a tough matchup against the New Jersey Devils.

The 30-year-old winger has fallen under this mark in 26 of 45 games (57.8%) and the Devils have conceded the second-fewest goals in the NHL (119).

Rust was held pointless in a 4-2 loss to New Jersey when these teams met in December.
