Top NHL picks December 2: Bet on Ottawa’s streak of unders to continue

With three NHL games on the Friday night slate, we’re here to offer one pick for each.

The pregame narrative: The Ottawa Senators are riding an extensive streak of unders, while the New York Islanders have fared well inside their home barn. Elsewhere, the Winnipeg Jets should continue their scoring kick against a weaker opponent.

Below are our NHL picks for December 2.

Odds as of 12:18 pm on 12/02/2022.

NHL picks

Best Bet : OTT/NYR under 6.5 goals (-115)

Ottawa is on quite an unders streak, and we’re hopping aboard.

Each of the Senators’ past nine games has fallen below this line, and on the season they’ve hit the under in 14 of 22 games (63.6%).

Cam Talbot, the Sens’ primary puck-stopper, is back in the crease tonight for his seventh consecutive start. That means he’s contributed to six straight unders in Ottawa games.

On the other side, reigning Vezina winner Igor Shesterkin is likely manning the Rangers’ crease leaving the ice first During the morning skate. Shesterkin (2.58 GAA, .913 SV%) hasn’t put up as impressive numbers as a season ago, but he’s still more than competent for a solid New York squad.

Just two days ago, the Rangers beat the Senators, 3-1. Last year, all three of these teams’ meetings totaled six goals or fewer. We don’t expect that to change tonight.

Key stats: At all strengths, the Senators and Rangers have scored a combined 5.52 goals per 60 since the start of November, per Natural Stat Trick.

Quick picks

Islanders 60-min moneyline (+104): We aren’t in love with the Islanders results of late, as their 5-on-5 goals percentage since Nov. 1 (53.3%) far outweighs their xG percentage in that span (41.9%).

Still, New York was off the past two nights and has a distinct rest advantage over Nashville, which will play for a third time in four days (all in different cities). The Isles are 8-3-0 at home, so getting plus money odds for another regulation win at UBS Arena feels right.

Jets over 3.5 goals (-132): You won’t usually see extra juice on a line this high, but it’s warranted with how the Jets have been scoring lately — and how frequently the Blue Jackets are allowing goals from the opposition.

Columbus has yielded at least three goals in each of its past nine games, which puts us in the ballpark to clear this line. As for Winnipeg, it has four-plus goals in four of five games, averaging 4.4 goals per game in that span.
