Singapore is known as one of the safest countries in the world, and a TikToker literally put that theory to the test.

Man leaves laptop unattended at Starbucks to prove Singapore is safe

A TikToker named Uptin Saiidi, who posts under the username (@uptin), decided to leave his laptop unattended in a Starbucks store for an hour while he went to another place for brunch. The reason? He wanted to see how safe Singapore really is.

Unsurprisingly, the video ends with Uptin finding his laptop exactly where he left it.

To support his confidence in carrying out the experiment, the content creator cited government statistics from 2021, saying Singapore had 250 days without a single report of common types of crime.

Unsurprisingly, the video ends with Uptin finding his laptop exactly where he left it.

“Honesty and fairness is a big part of the culture here,” he says of why his laptop remained untouched. “Basic needs are met so people don’t feel like they need to resort to crime.”

Surveillance plays a big part in maintaining a near zero-crime state, he said.

The cameras are a major deterrent to crime, and so is punishment.

The Singapore Government Agency website states that “whoever commits theft shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to three years, or with fine, or with both.”

Uptin’s video has garnered tons of reactions.

“I live in Singapore and left my phone at a bus stop and the next day it was in a plastic bag taped to the wall with a note saying lost phone,” a user commented.

“This is a very expensive social experiment,” a second user said.

“In London, it’ll get stolen even if you’re sat in front of it,” another added.
