Tiger Woods, who missed two golf majors after having ankle surgery in April, also won’t play in next month’s British Open, Sports Illustrated reported on Friday.
“We have been advised that he won’t be playing at Hoylake,” an R&A spokesperson told the publication via email. “We wish Tiger all the best with his recovery.”
Woods announced on April 19 that he had undergone a subtalar fusion on his right ankle to address arthritis from a previous fracture. He was involved in a serious car crash in 2021 that nearly cost him his leg.
The ankle surgery came 10 days after he withdrew from the Masters, despite making the cut for a record-tying 23rd time, because he had aggravated his plantar fasciitis.
NO BLACK PLAYERS? US Open field reflects golf’s missed opportunity with Tiger Woods
Woods has skipped both the PGA Championship and the current US Open while recovering.
He won the British Open three times (2000, 2005 and 2006) and has 15 major titles overall. He played in last year’s British Open at St. Andrews but missed the cut.
This year’s tournament is scheduled for July 16-19 at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake, England.
