Three people, 56 rescue dogs injured in plane crash on Wisconsin golf course

  • by

It was a case of a double-doggy rescue when a plane-load of pooches from various animal shelters crashed onto a golf course in Wisconsin on Tuesday.

The 56 dogs were being flown to an animal welfare society in Waukesha when the plane crashed about 9am on the grounds of the Western Lakes Golf Club in Delafield.

All the dogs on board were attended to by veterinarians from Waukesha’s Humane Animal Welfare Society, while three humans on board the plane were taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The large twin engine aircraft crashed onto the third hole of the golf course, Lake Country Fire and Rescue assistant chief Matthew Haerter said.

By the time emergency services arrived, all three people on board had already escaped the wreckage. “All three had non-life threatening injuries and were transported to a local hospital for further treatment,” Haerter said.

Emergency services personnel then set about rescuing all 56 dogs and took them to the HAWS shelter where they were treated by veterinarians for a range of unspecified injuries.

“Our team is very good at jumping into action … so we were ready just to take care of these guys,” HAWS director of organizational development Maggie Tate-Techtmann said.

“These dogs will be available for adoption in the coming days as soon as they are ready for that.”

The plane clipped its wings on trees as it crashed, spilling 1135 liters of fuel onto the snow below.

“(Emergency services) immediately began operations to isolate exposure to the environment as the wreckage is investigated and removed,” Haerter said.

Police would not comment on the cause of the plane crash.

The Federal Aviation Administration is now investigating the accident.
