Last week I did an article on the three most surprising MLB teams, and this week I am going to do the three most disappointing MLB teams. These teams in my opinion were all projected to have a winning record at minimum coming into the 2022 season. All three of these teams are either at or below a .500 win percentage and also ended up becoming sellers at the trade deadline. It is not hard to tell you that these teams are having very disappointing seasons, but you need to know the teams for you to agree or disagree, so here they are.
1-Los Angeles Angels
The first team that has been very disappointing is the Los Angeles Angels, who thought their problem was pitching. They spent some money in the past offseason to bring in some starting-level pitchers like Michael Lorenzen, Noah Syndergaard, Aaron Loup, and Archie Bradley and kept Raisel Iglesias. The team never really did anything after an okay start and have just gone downhill with injuries and players not performing like they thought they would. The team currently sits at 51-64 which is fourth in the American League West, when plenty of people thought this team could be in the playoffs this year.
They also went through a manager change when they were just 56 games in. Joe Maddon was fired after starting 27-29 and that is when Phil Nevin stepped in and has a current record of 24-35 which now has them at 51-64. With such a horrible start it made them become sellers at the trade deadline and trade players like Iglesias, Syndergaard, Brandon Marsh, and Tyler Wade. The Angels now will just finish the disappointing season and hope to make moves in the offseason. They may look to trade Shohei Ohtani and see what kind of package they can get or just look to spend more money in free agency.
2- San Francisco Giants
My next disappointing team for the 2022 MLB season is the San Francisco Giants, they won 107 games last year but are having a worse year this season. I know the losses of future Hall of Famer Buster Posey and Kevin Gausman were huge, but they still had good depth and added more pieces like Alex Cobb, Carlos Rodon, and Joc Pederson. They are currently 57-57 and third in the very tough National League West but they still have a good enough team for them to compete and be better than this.
This team has been underperforming so much and became sellers at the trade deadline. They traded players like Matthew Boyd, Curt Casali, Trevor Rosenthal, and Darin Ruf. In return, they got a handful of prospects which lets you know they are not making a playoff push. They are six games back in the Wild Card race and would need a big run with them only being an okay team after the trade deadline moves. The San Francisco Giants are just a very average team and 2022 is not their year.
3-Boston Red Sox
My third and last but not least disappointing team of the 2022 MLB season is the Boston Red Sox. They won 92 games last year and made it to the American League Championship Series and fell just short of a World Series appearance. They did lose Kyle Schwarber and they made a bad trade by trading Hunter Renfroe away for Jackie Bradley Jr. who hit .210 with three home runs before being cut compared to Renfroe who is hitting .246 with 20 home runs. They did bring in some very valuable players like James Paxton and Trevor Story in the offseason but it has been a very underwhelming season for the Red Sox as they are 57-59 and currently sit in last place in the American League East.
Going into the 2022 season the Red Sox to a lot of people were supposed to be a playoff team and be a competing team once again. That is not what happened and they ended up also being small sellers at the trade deadline. They traded away Christian Vazquez and some other minor leaguers and they got Tommy Pham, Eric Hosmer, and a handful of prospects in return. So it seems like they are still maybe going to make a push for the playoffs only being 4.5 games back in the Wild Card race. If this Red Sox team makes the playoffs, you can call me shocked and I will feel very bad. Boston will look to make a run with only 45 games left to play and try to make another postseason push, but up to this point, they have been very disappointing in my eyes.
