After 6 months of availability, there are still just a small handful of laptops in the market sporting AMD’s latest Ryzen 7 Zen 3+ processor. Some models are a bit faster than others, but the performance spread thus far has been much narrower than expected.

2022 saw the launch of the mobile AMD Zen 3+ Ryzen 6000 series to replace the previous generation mobile Zen 3 Ryzen 5000 series. Although the year-over-year CPU performance uptick has been marginal at best, the real boost came in the form of the integrated Radeon 680M that effectively replaced the aging integrated Radeon RX Vega series. Our comparison charts below document all our reviewed Radeon 680M laptops and PCs thus far to see how they perform against one another and which model is the top model to get for maximum performance.

At first glance, we’re impressed by how close together all the 7 models perform. The performance spread is surprisingly tight especially when compared to something like the Core i7-1165G7 where certain models can perform 50 percent slower than another with the exact same processor. The Ryzen 7 PRO 6850U in the Lenovo ThinkPad T14s G3, for example, is only about 15 percent slower than the Ryzen 7 6800U in the Lenovo Yoga 7 14 even though the ThinkPad is the slowest performer in our database thus far.

As for the integrated Radeon 680M, it’s highly recommended to configure with dual-channel RAM or else graphics performance can drop by as much as 40 to 50 percent. Our graphics and gaming tests on the HP EliteBook 845 G9 and EliteBook 865 G9, for example, would result in slower-than-expected numbers since they shipped with single-channel RAM. Luckily, both can be upgraded or configured with dual-channel RAM to alleviate the issue.

The limited retail options at the moment are a bummer because the Ryzen 7 6000U series is proving to be an excellent and perhaps overlooked family by most shoppers. There’s really no underperforming option here so long as you keep in mind that RAM will have a huge impact on overall graphics performance. Kudos to the laptop makers for not massively underclocking the processor series at least on these initial models.
