The Oregon Trail Announced for Switch and PC

Gameloft announces that its modern version of the famous Oregon Trail video game will be releasing on Nintendo Switch and PC.

Mobile game developer Gameloft has announced that its mobile game The Oregon Trail is going to be releasing on Nintendo Switch and PC at the end of November. The Oregon Trail had already been released by Gameloft on Apple Arcade in 2021, but this is the first time the game is coming to a non-Apple audience.

The Oregon Trail was originally created by a middle school teacher named Don Rawitsch for use in his classroom in 1971, but quickly grew beyond that when he was hired by a company that made educational software. Through that company, the game quickly spread to schools across the United States and became something of a cultural phenomenon, spawning parody games and plenty of memes. In 2009, Gameloft made its first The Oregon Trail mobile game, which quickly lead to sequels in the following years.

In 2021, Gameloft released the newest The Oregon Trail game for Apple Arcade, and since then it has only been available on mobile devices. However, the official Gameloft Twitter account recently announced that The Oregon Trail will be coming out on Nintendo Switch and PC at the end of November. Gameloft already has a popular Nintendo Switch release under its belt Disney’s Dreamlight Valley. This is great news for people who prefer gaming on non-mobile platforms or for those who don’t own Apple products, as it will bring this nostalgia-filled game to a much wider audience.

The announcement of a Nintendo Switch and PC release for The Oregon Trail confirms that Gameloft is putting more work into this than many mobile games. The studio also seems to be very conscious of its audience and the potential reach and influence of the game, as Gameloft has included better Native American representation in this version of the game.

The improved representation is a great move and will most likely increase the game’s popularity on the new platforms. The Oregon Trail already has a lot of appeal from its cultural presence, memes, and the nostalgia factor, so Gameloft should have no problem getting players interested in this newest iteration of The Oregon Trail.

The fact that it was originally released as a mobile game might be off-putting to some potential players. However, Gameloft’s success with Disney’s Dreamlight Valley proves that the studio can make good games for non-mobile platforms, which might help ease the concerns of The Oregon Trail fans

The Oregon Trail is now available now on Apple Arcade and arrives on PC and Switch in November.
