The NHL’s infamous “Santa Brawl.”

  • by

We’re taking you back in time a little for this one as we take a look back at an infamous moment that took place at Nassau Coliseum back in 2003.

The New York Islanders marketing department wasn’t happy with their ticket sales for a December 23rd game and felt that they needed to get more fans into the building to spread some holiday cheer. They came up with a pretty unique idea to allow anyone who was wearing a Santa Claus outfit to get into the building for free, even promising to let those fans get on the ice during the intermission where once again the goal was to get everyone in the holiday spirit.

Their creative idea would turn bad though when a couple of New York Rangers fans decided to sneak their team colors out onto the ice. After the Santas were allowed onto the ice, the Rangers fans revealed that they were wearing Rangers’ jerseys under their outfits and were promptly jumped by a number of Islanders fans in Santa outfits.

The whole thing ended up looking like something you would expect to see in a comedic sitcom, including a young child practically hanging off the back of one of the Rangers fans at one point in the fiasco.

Thankfully, MSG Networks recently caught up with many of the people involved in the incident and got them to share their story about that fateful night. The best part is that it comes along with some new camera angles of the events of that night, letting us see it better than ever before.
