In the NBA, no one produces more than Luka Doncic. The Dallas Mavericks point guard generates 54.8 points for his team every night, either by scoring or assisting his teammates. The Slovenian is the league’s leading scorer with 33.5 points on average and the fourth best in terms of assists with an average of 8.6 per game.
During their loss to the Detroit Pistonswho prior to the game were bottom of the Western Conference, 59 of the Mavericks125 points came via Doncic. The point guard scored 35 points, including seven three-pointers, with a further 24 scored from the 10 assists he dished out. Four of those assists went to Christian Wood and three went to Tim Hardaway Jr. for three-pointers.
The monstrous numbers, however, were not enough for the Mavericks top prevail, and the Texas-based team has now slipped to 11th in the West and has a win rate lower than 50 percent for the first time since starting the season at 2-3. They have also lost five of their last six games and eight of their last 12.
Having an MVP contender is not enough
It is paradoxical that having one of the best players in the NBA is not enough for them Mavswho have looked to a diminished Kemba Walker as a player who can make a difference.
Doncic is a serious contender for MVP of the season, but it has been clear for some time that he can’t do it all. His performance declines as the minutes go by and he goes from extraordinary first halves to poor second halves.
With 37.4 minutes on average, nobody spends more time on the court than him in the NBA.
The worst part is everyone could see that Mavs needed to acquire the supporting cast to help their star player. Despite being one of the contenders for the MVP award, Doncic faces the real possibility of missing out on the playoffs.
