Week 4 brings intrigue, with some in-state battles — notably Texas-Texas Tech, TCU-SMU and Rice-Houston — and key conference games for Baylor and Texas A&M. Let’s get to your questions.

What do you think Texas Tech should do at quarterback when Tyler Shough returns from injury? Donovan Smith shows signs that he can be a reliable QB if he quits making bad decisions every game. Lots of Tech fans are calling for Behren Morton to get a chance, is he a reliable option? — Stephen R.

Getting Shough some action, even if it’s part time to ease him back upon return, makes sense. He won the job through the offseason and preseason camp, so clearly coach Joey McGuire and offensive coordinator Zach Kittley have confidence in him. Once he’s healthy, he should play, even if it’s just a few series to regain his rhythm.

Whether he takes over as the starter upon return may depend on how well Smith and Morton are progressing. If one of them has the hot hand and the Red Raiders are winning games, it’s probably unwise to mess with that mojo. If QB play is spotty and inconsistent, then plugging Shough back in as the starter immediately might be the move.

McGuire said Monday that Shough must earn it.

“Tyler would be the first one to tell you that … he’s going to have to come out and show that he’s ready to go,” McGuire said.
