Tesla throws in another freebie to entice December buyers

  • by

Tesla is giving away 10,000 free miles or kilometers of Supercharger top-ups to buyers who pull the trigger now and have their cars delivered in December, since it doesn’t allow for delivery waits. The offer is just the next in a series of incentives that Tesla uses to lower the purchase price of its cars in all but name during the holiday shopping spree in the West.

In China, it didn’t beat about the bush, but straight away cut the Model 3 and Model Y price by nearly 10% facing softening demand and increased competition, with insurance discounts and free colors tacked on. In the US, however, it is now offering a US$3750 credit towards the purchase of a Tesla in stock for delivery this month, or about what its cars would qualify for as a federal subsidy when those kick in on January 1st, 2023. Europe has just started giving similar discounts for inventory and showroom vehicles, too.

The free 10,000 Supercharger miles kick in immediately after purchase and are valid for two years. While 10,000 miles for free on a fast Tesla charger may sound like a lot, they are not transferable, and in dollar terms that would be up to about US$1500, depending on the cost of Superchargers in the buyer’s area and the time of day they get to plug in

Still, Tesla is apparently making its year-end offers as irresistible as it can without resorting to direct price cuts as it doesn’t want to go through a demand trough in December while potential customers are waiting for the 2023 subsidies to kick in.
