NORMAN, Okla. — Ludvig Aberg shot 5-under-par 67 and Jack Wall made a hole in one as top-seeded Texas Tech took the clubhouse lead in Monday’s first round of the NCAA Norman Regional men’s golf tournament.
Aberg played a bogey-free round and birdied two of his last three holes at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club. Freshman Matthew Comegys got hot late, making birdie on his last two holes and three of his last five to shoot 3-under 69.
“I think it was just staying patient the whole round,” Comegys said. “The front nine, I feel like I had some opportunities and they weren’t falling, so I just stayed patient with my game and luckily kind of got the putter rolling at the end and hit some good shots.”
Wall aced the par-3 No. 12 on the way to a 1-under 71. Calum Scott shot 71 as well, draining four birdies in a row from holes No. 11 through 14 and giving back a stroke with a bogey on the par-4 17th.
With four of his teammates breaking par, Tyran Snyders’ 72 was the discard score.
“We really kind of came alive on the back side,” Tech coach Greg Sands said. “We needed to, because we probably didn’t play the first four or five holes well. They were very gettable, a couple of downwind holes.
“So it was nice to play the end of the front nine well and, really, 10 through 15 kind of got some things going and then really finished well.”
In the clubhouse at 10-under, Tech had a one-shot lead on host Oklahoma. They’re followed by Alabama at 7-under, Duke at 5-under, Colorado at 4-under and North Florida at 3-under. Players from two teams in the 14-team field were still on the course.
The 54-hole tournament is one of six regionals across the country scheduled to conclude Wednesday. From each regional, the top five teams and the lowest-scoring player not on those teams qualify for the NCAA championship tournament May 26-31 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.
