Motorola Thursday announced its third-gen Edge series smartphone. The Edge 2022 packs a solid punch much above its entry price of just $499. The phone is headed to the US and if you’re a T-Mobile customer or are planning to switch to the Un-carrier, you can get it for free with a qualifying line.
Motorola Edge 2022 specifications
The Motorola Edge 2022 is the first smartphone to feature MediaTek’s new Dimensity 1050 processor. It’s a 6nm chipset with two Cortex-A78 CPU cores clocked at 2.5 GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores operating at a maximum frequency of 2.0 GHz. There’s the Mali G610 MC3 GPU for graphics duties. The Lenovo-owned company has paired the processor with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of non-expandable storage.
The Dimensity 1050 supports both mmWave and sub-6GHz 5G connectivity. So the Motorola Edge 2022 is ready for whatever flavor of 5G your carrier offers. And thanks to the 5,000mAh battery, it should be good enough to last a full day with 5G usage. The device boasts 30W TurboPower charging, 15W wireless charging, and 5W reverse wireless charging.
This handset sports a 6.6-inch OLED display with FHD+ resolutions (1,080 x 2,400 pixels). It’s a 10-bit panel with a 144Hz refresh rate and HDR10+ support. The phone features an under-display fingerprint scanner as well.
For photography, the Motorola Edge 2022 features a 50-megapixel main camera at the back. It offers OIS (Optical Image Stabilization), a first for the Edge lineup. You can record 4K videos with this camera. The primary shooter is flanked by a 13-megapixel ultrawide lens that can also double as a macro camera. We have a depth sensor as well. A 32-megapixel camera sits on the front.
The Motorola Edge 2022 boots Android 12 with Motorola’s My UX skin on top. But it’s mostly a stock Android experience. Measuring 160.86×74.24×7.99mm in dimensions and 170 grams in weight, the handset is fairly slim and lightweight too. However, it’s only IP52 rated though, so you aren’t getting the best protection against dust and water. Other highlights include dual stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, and NFC.
T-Mobile is offering this phone for free
Motorola has priced the Edge 2022 at $499. T-Mobile will be the first carrier to sell it in the US. And it is offering the handset for free to new and existing customers if they add a new Magenta Max line. The company will cover the cost with 24 monthly bill credits. Magenta Max also gives you a free subscription to Netflix, Paramount+, and Vix+ and offers many other exclusive perks.
