PK Subban signed a multiyear contract with ESPN on Thursday.
The retired NHL defenseman will make his season debut in the coming weeks, work primarily as a studio analyst for NHL coverage and be on site for select games throughout the regular season.
Subban was in the studio during ESPN’s coverage of the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
“For a long time, I’ve sat in the locker room with teammates and discussed what it would be like to be on the other side as an analyst,” Subban said. “I have a vested interest in growing the game and know the importance of the rapidly expanding sports landscape, so I look forward to bringing my unique insights from having recently been on the ice and now my off-ice perspective.”
Subban will also host “PK’s Places,” part of the Places Universe expansion on ESPN+, starting next year. The show will examine the history of hockey and the NHL, with Subban visiting some of his favorite people and places in the sport.
“PK brings a fresh perspective to his analysis, having recently retired from the game, but he also draws on much more than just his experience on the ice, which gives him a unique, fun perspective that fans will love,” said Mark Gross. ESPN senior vice president, production and remote events. “We have a great team of analysts, hosts and reporters, and adding PK to the mix just makes us that much better.”
Subban retired from the NHL on Sept. 20, the same day Zdeno Chara and Keith Yandle announced their respective retirements. The 33-year-old had 467 points (115 goals, 352 assists) in 834 games over 13 seasons for the Montreal Canadiens, Nashville Predators and New Jersey Devils, and 62 points (18 goals, 44 assists) in 96 playoff games. He won the 2013 Norris Trophy voted as the best defenseman in the NHL and made the NHL First All-Star Team twice (2012-13, 2014-15) and the Second All-Star Team once (2017-18). The Toronto native helped Canada win gold at the 2014 Sochi Olympics and was the cover athlete for EASPORTS NHL 19, which captured Subban in his famous “Skateman” celebration pose.
In 2022, Subban won the King Clancy Memorial Trophy, awarded to the NHL player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice, and has made noteworthy humanitarian contributions in his community. He is committed to racial and social justice, underserved youth, COVID-19 relief and youth hockey through the PK Subban Foundation.
